How sad especially in this economy, these people are attempting to do things that are good for our planet. From what I see in these pictures I feel that they should be able to continue on with their pursuits. Leave them alone.

If Every VOTER is gardening (like in the "Old Days") then the Politicians will start also, just to stay "In" and revoted. Or not ?

This is, of course, a product of our capitalist legal system. Homes are supposed to be unproductive places of pure consumption. If individuals are able to make their homes productive then they would be less reliant on corporations, and "we" wouldn't want that now would we? This all goes back to zoning practices that began being pushed at the turn of the 20th century by corporations and well off local heavyweights under the guise of "community standards"...

Hey everone in Memphis - get out there and generate complaints - Everyone - go to this neighborhood (or any) in Memphis, write down a house number and find something you don't like about it and call it in as a complaint. Generate a 1000 complaints this weekend!!! How about someone with a perfect lawn with 2 inch blades of grass and no weeds - the toxic chemicals (herbicides) used for such a lawn are certainly a nuisance! How about someone with ugly shrubs???

What an amazing yard! I wish it was mine! See, this is why I don't live in the city. Snooty neighbors complaining for nothing. It is HIS yard that he paid for. He should be able to do what he wants with is, especially something so constructive. Kids need things like this!! They need to learn how to grow and harvest food, know where their food comes from so they can appreciate what Mother Nature has provided us with. It's also a good way to keep kids out of trouble. The "judge" needs to recognize! He really shouldn't be a judge. That is not justice! They should have told the complaining neighbor to mind their own business.

Dear Judge Potter,
I am writing in support of Adam Guerrero, his urban garden, and his selfless dedication to helping school children understand where food comes from.
Oil has been over $80/barrel for a long time now. Research indicates petroleum production has passed its peak, and is heading for terminal decline. Our industrial agriculture system is totally dependent on cheap energy.
At some point, it may well be that Guerrero's complaining neighbours will come to him, begging for some of the food he produces.
Thomas Jefferson said, "If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."
If we do not allow people to grow their own food in whatever situation they have, I fear we are dooming civilization to death by starvation. Please allow Adam Guerrero to continue what appears to be responsible and careful urban food production.

Adam should be commended for these efforts!
I am very thankful for people such as Adam that take their precious time to mentor and teach team building, agriculture, etc. to these wonderful teenagers/young adults, BRAVO Adam, I hope you're allowed to keep up the great work!

The world is being heavily polluted, species are dying, the economy is collapsing, and the world is pretty much coming to an end due to human activities -- but this neighborhood garden is somehow a threat. The stupidity level is off the chart.

People are just crazy. Who wouldn't want to see someone becoming more self-sufficient through gargening? I swear "they" aren't going to be happy until we all live in sterile white plastic cubes and eat "soylent green"!

This proves what has gone wrong in our government, there is no common sense used in creating laws and it is tearing down instead of building. Praise to those who actually love a job enough to live it and who want to better our world! Insanity rules it seems.

This is ludicrous beyond words...If what Memphis politicians are trying to do is dismantle the whole of government and make it obvious to all the people of our nation from city to county to state to nation....we are unable to see that real solutions exist in our own yards....well...I am without words.
Perhaps, those who say governments must go down and all politics be reinvented before we can really save this planet that is our only oasis....ARE Correct! Is it true that the greatest darkness is before the dawn? Even government servants need to get a clue!

This teacher is doing what he does best. Teaching. Leave him alone or help him out.
There are so many cities that are suffering more each day from food availability and pricing. The ranks of the poor are growing and the costs are rising, while wages are staying the same or decreasing. We need more sources for food and growing what we can ourselves helps even if it is only from a small plot.
Change the regulations to allow gardens to replace lawns. This is only common sense folks. It doesn't take a math teacher to know that this is what must happen, but it does take a math teacher to take the initiative and teach others what he has learned and to offer his help for free.

Yes we need new laws, new codes and new judges. After Monsanto and Bechtel get done with us, Food & water security is what we will all wish we had focused on. By then guys like Guerrero will have to stand guard to protect their gardens from the very people who wanted to get rid of them but are now hungry. We should get rid of lawns and unregulated mowers and blowers that pollute the air like there is no tomorrow. We should outlaw the sale of roundup and we should eat those pesky dandelions that happen to be one of the most nutritious plant God has put on this earth. It's all backwards and we will be forced to face that fact sooner than later.

This whole thing is just ridiculous! The neighbors should come over, observe, ask questions... pick up a shovel?? Seriously, would they rather these 3 boys wander the streets & get into trouble?! Wow. Yes, "normally" a veg. garden is in the backyard, but it needs to be where it gets the most SUNSHINE. Maybe the backyard is too shady to grow things well. Maybe the neighbors all around have overly- fertilized, perfectly groomed, BORING lawns. I'm so sad for them. The chemicals on those types of lawns are killing the soil web, the worms & other creatures that live under ground & help to make the soil HEALTHY. ( go look inside those vermi-compost bins! ) I have veg. gardens, a green house, & a compost pile behind my shed...and next spring I'm installing some rain barrels! Plllbbbt!!!! ;) Seriously; don't we all have enough to worry about in OUR own lives? Leave this guy ALONE!!!!

This man's neighbor's ought to be ashamed of themselves. What this man is teaching his family is exactly what the rest of the world should be teaching their children, he is setting a perfect example and those jealous neighbors are the ones that should be getting fined for even thinking that this home is anything but respect. Which they have no idea respect is all about. The Judge should have gone over and inspected the situation out for himself, shame on him too! God Bless this family, may they keep this lovely garden as is! I am sorry that your and your family are going through this, I am sending blessings from above.

i visited the garden today - and it is WONDERFUL. not tidy like you'd expect in a more upscale neighborhood, but NOTHING AMISS. the boxes are worm bins, not bee hives, and they are working fine, producing some of the finest vermicompost (expensive to buy) i have seen - and i am a vermicomposter myself. the rain barrels are not filled with mosquitoes, having on small openings. the hives are tucked out of the way. the front vegetable and herb garden is more productive than my own. in short,this guy is doing GREAT. his neighbor is a bit nutty (and loudly threatening), but there is NOTHING amiss about this young teacher's fantastic "green scape"

So, where's the blight? The house is fine and the yard and the shrubs don't appear to be a blight. The fact that he's got a garden, and that's he's gotten some kids off the street and is actually teaching them, intellectually and socially, should earn him an award, not a legal problem. God bless him, more people should follow his example.
