  • OUCH!

    OUCH!
  • MAKING TWO INTO ONE

When the city and county government finally consolidated, it was a function of "personality, party politics, angry suburban reaction to annexation and a city-imposed wheel tax, public health concerns related to adequate sewers, demographic changes that portended a serious declining tax base in the central city, competing school systems in search of an adequate revenue base," and so on. Sound familiar, at least a little bit?

  • FROM MY SEAT

STREAKS IN HEAVEN Michael Anderson. David Brown. Kalpana Chawla. Laurel Clark. Rick Husband. William McCool. Ilan Ramon. These names will live forever in some circles. Small, tight circles. For most of us, they'll fade with the years. We'll certainly remember their collective tragedy, but will their lives and achievements garner the adulation of Jordan, Ali, Tiger, the Babe?

  • LEGACY

Perveen Rustomfram, widow of late Flyer editor/sports columnist Dennis Freeland, and Feroza, their seven-year-old daughter, were on hand with other members of the Freeland family Saturday at The Pyramid for ceremonies honoring Freeland and renaming the University of Memphis locker room at the facility in his honor. The plaque reads: "The University of Memphis locker room at The Pyramid from this day forth shall be named in the honor of Dennis Freeland, who as a member of the Memphis media, covered Tiger basketball for the Memphis Flyer for over 10 years, who, as a Tiger basketball fan, demonstrated his love for this team from his days as a Memphis student"

BOMBSHELL OR DUD? If the current scramble to reconfigure the school systems of Shelby County were a board game, then the card played Tuesday afternoon by Memphis city council attorney Allen Wade would have been marked "Bombshell" in big letters on its backside. The fine print on the other side, as Wade outlined it to a rapt audience of council members and onlookers at the council's "retreat" at the Oaksedge complex, was that the Memphis school board, which city mayor Willie Herenton wants to abolish, has no legal right to exist in the first place.
