Born in Memphis, though all records of that unfortunate event have been expunged by the authorities. Confined to various institutions "for my own good" most of my teen years. Electroshock treatments have erased — Thank God — most memories of young adulthood, though it is possible I was married and sired a dozen children, though it is also possible that was just a dream. Later in life, visited the finest schools in Europe — Cambridge, Heidelberg, Durham — until the security guards ran me off. Returned to America and took up residence in the old Lauderdale Mansion, only a shell of its former magnificence ever since the family lost its fortune, foolishly invested in dirigibles, linotypes, and flax. As a result, depend for my income on the sales of my book ("Ask Vance") and a curiously popular question-and-answer history/trivia column that runs each month in Memphis magazine. The whole heartrending saga is told in the preface to my book, so if you think I'm going to tell it here for free, you are sadly mistaken, my friend.
