Yangui69-Amen. What part of "smite thee above the necks" "faith in Allah altogether and everywhere" "fight those who believe not in Allah" etc... do people not understand.
I am as big a anti-war person as they come. But, I'm not so blinded by my belief in peace that I can't see it is not shared by those who follow the Koran in a literal sense. The either want conversion or death-there is no choice.
"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" only makes sense when you have your eyes, which you don't after you've been "smithed" at the neck.
"Instill terror into the hearts of the nonbelievers" is NOT a peaceful religion.
Oh, me oh my. What's a gay liberal peace activist to do in this post 9/11 world?
I won't rest till I win. Wait, it's not a contest. Okay, I won't quit till mine is in bold type.
Well, Ms. Washington Elite, I guess we're just not good enough for you or the stores you listed in your comments regarding what Memphis needs to satisfy your tastes. It's attitudes like this, mostly from out of towner's, who continue to keep Memphis from having the "status quo" luxuries you seem to need in order to put a smile on your face. Your suggestions were actually quite nice until you ended your letter with "But I suspect the price point and styling does not match enough of the Memphis demographic for Anthropologie to open a shop there."
And just WHAT kind of music do you produce in DC? WHERE is your creative arts district? How many "Elvis's" have come from inside the beltway?
We'll decide what is and isn't our "demographic". You can continue to shop in the cities that meet your requirements.
The only thing I can really say about you is "Bless Her Heart". All true residents of Memphis will know EXACTLY what I mean by that.
You come back now, ya hear?
How nice of the Flyer to admit they used a bias opinion to select the best. Wait, this isn't a contest, just an exhibit. So, why should anyone receive "comment of the year". Especially when insiders made the selection. I'll just hold my head high and be proud of my "exhibit" until next year when hopefully an outside panel will select the "not a winner" best exhibitor. Seriously, thanks, Flyer, for another super year of great journalism. You're keeping the dream alive!
Yeah, No Meat Please, I seem to have read this exact letter at the start of each year in various publications. Not saying it isn't true, just not very original.
Julie-I'm with you on being at the top of the food chain. VERY cool indeed.
Bass Pro-I wasn't for the worlds largest bait shop filling our pyramid at first thought, but, considering it will bring a much needed element downtown I say bring it on! By "needed element" I mean a race and class of people that seem to have been pushed out of the heart of our city.
There has been too much emphasis on making sure Beale St./downtown catered largely to only African Americans. Through tax breaks, minority contracts, bidding codes, and far too many other means to list it has become a place that no longer makes everyone feel welcome.
Now, hopefully, we can finally have a nice, diverse, mix of all races intermingling on our downtown streets the way a "real" metropolitan area does it. For far too long this city has been trying so hard to "make good" for centuries old wrongs, that nobody alive today directly committed or ever suffered from, that we've let our image become nothing but just that-a city that "owes" something to a only one demographic of our society. All this has done is cause us to move backwards rather than advance any of the issues we need to resolve.
So, even if Bass Pro Shop does brings in Bubba's by the truckload, let's get this party started!
MLGW, as with most services (ha) this city "provides", is a joke. The few at the top making multi-millions between them could care less who loses their lights, homes, jobs, families or anything else for that matter. As with the WW Herenton administration and other city agencies it just keeps getting worse and worse in ALL areas every year. To hell with everybody but the ones at the top floor of city hall and MLGW. As far as they are concerned, the finally got control of the city, so to HELL with everyone else. Just keep their fat paychecks going to their greedy, illegal hands. It's even spilled over into the private sector. Just watch-this city is going to get much worse before, if ever, it gets any better.
"THIS TOWN NEEDS AN ENEMA!" (and quick, too)
