Um, Unicorn, no offense, but your comments strike me as stupid.
First of all, Midtown's property values are twice what you pay in Millington for a good reason. The area is in demand. In fact, Midtown's property values have held steadier during the financial meltdown than any other part of Shelby County.
Secondly, 2600 Poplar isn't in Midtown, neither is the University of Memphis, nor is Orange Mound...NONE of the areas you mentioned are even IN Midtown. Now, I'm aware that there are Memphians who live in the suburbs who want to believe that the corner of Poplar & Highland is the center of Midtown, but...
Oh, Bonehead, you have to understand that Nikki Tinker's entire constituency is based on bigotry.
Only a fool could assert that Cohen's record on black issues/civil rights is anything but stellar.
Tinker's supporters bring up gay rumors because they're homophobic bigots.
But alas, this year is about transcendence. Millions of blacks, whites, and every other color are going to elect Barack Obama president, and thousands of blacks, whites, and every other color are going to send Steve Cohen back to Washington to continue serving our district ably.
Bigots, of all colors, will complain. The rest of us will move forward, with or without them.
What a pathetic hack.
The era of centrist DLC is losers is swiftly coming to an end, thank god.
Oh, and Cmp, those women spend THOUSANDS of dollars every year on their Halloween, I mean Carnival costumes. Imagine if they pooled the money they spent with the money that goes to charity, and then maybe a few of them decided to get their hands dirty in helping the "least of these" around them when no one's looking/taking their picture for "publications" like RSVP.
Preach it, Marty.
THIS white Central Gardens resident calls the University Club and complains specifically when their loud drunken Carnival parties are going on, yet would never dream of leaving nasty messages for any other kind of loud party.
Not only does Carnival foster a throwback to the days of racial segregation, it encourages the delusions of Memphis's socialites, who don't matter anywhere outside of this city, who consider each others' respective Krewes as goalposts of status, yes, but mostly of pure lineage. I will always remember the day I mistakenly asked what Carnival was and was roped into an hour-long explanation, replete with gossip about other Memphians, in which the phrase "SHE will NEVER be in Memphi, let's put it that way" was considered a final statement on a person's humanity.
Such an insular world these people live in, rotating between their chosen schools, neighborhoods, three or four society churches/Republican parties of prayer, and their "charity work," which involves 60-year-old women dressing up as pretty pretty princesses and calling each other "duchess."
That's what's so funny about this...Cohen is a congressman. So what if he's a bit of a lit fuse sometimes? He's not alone in that...
So I fail to see how a "feminist" could justify voting for an unknown quantity in Nikki Tinker, who has little to no record on womens' and progressive issues, in order to give Cohen and people like him a "time-out." I'd rather make a deal with the devil to get my issues passed than make a deal with the devil to NOT get my issues passed, my God.
This is the same logic that says, "I support Hillary Clinton, Obama beat Clinton, therefore I'm going to vote against all of the interests of myself and my nation (and everything Hillary Clinton believes in) by casting a vote for John McCain, neener neener!"
Come on, kiddos.
And let's remember this, feminist voter. A joke can be poorly received, but a legislator's RECORD is what's important. ON THAT NOTE:
1. Cohen has voted 100% of the time with the positions of the Children's Defense Fund.
2. Cohen gets a 100% rating from NARAL, as well.
3. 100% from the ACLU.
4. An "A" grade from the NAACP.
5. An A+ on Darfur issues.
And on and on and on...
And Nikki Tinker has...what?
