The unintended consequence will be increased ground level ozone and increased incidence of asthma as lower average speed of vehicles with longer wait times to enter from secondary streets all mean increased tail-pipe emissions. But, hey, there's more parking with a great buffer to execute your parallel parking maneuver so I know the merchants are loving it.

I love these "government can't" folks. The cost of distribution in the US is less than 10%, among the lowest in the world, thanks to the Eisenhower Interstate system and the NHTSB. Taking off on our socialist road network is considered the ultimate expression of freedom. If that isn't enough of the "government can" then I would suggest you look at the USDA and the role of governement sponsored agricultural research and food production. We feed the world based on agricultural research performed by scientists employed at land grant colleges and the USDA all paid for by the people. The simple fact is that there are lots of things that have to get done and are very hard to get done based on the profit motive, those are things that the government has to do. My favorite is when the "can'ters" use their pc to spew on the internet, because, of course, computers and the internet were initially developed on behalf of the government. I could go on with thousands of examples, but the "can'ters" stopped reading half-way throught the first example.
