I was fortunate enough to encounter Fred playing in Handy Park on a couple of my trips to Memphis and even have one of his self-produced albums - and a pick - as mementos. His playing was always a treat to hear and several local guitarists I spoke to credited him as an inspiration in their development. He was clearly held in high regard both as a man and a musician. It's an indictment of current Beale Street booking policies that in recent years he was to be found playing on the fringes and not in the centre of this tourist trap, because Fred was the real deal. A sad loss.
