As a competitor (duo) this year in the solo/duo category I have to say that many of the finalists were not the best musicians or entertainers. Scoring all depends on the judges idea of what constitutes blues. My duo took the non 12 bar form from the turn of the 20th century and added our own stamp. Every musician in our venue had us pegged to move on to the semis after the first night based on our performance and execution. To most the fact that we did not play the 12 bar blues was what separated us from the rest. But the judges didn't see it like the musicians.
The Blues Foundation is trying to keep blues alive. In a competition sometimes the best do not win. Look at the past non winners that went on to bigger things Sean Costello, Susan Tedeschi, Watermelon Slim, Moreland and Arbuckle to name a few.
Harrison Kennedy was my pick to win.
