My band played in the IBC back in 1999. We were at the Black Diamond and played the last set, and we brought the house down. Everyone in the room thought we were the sure winners and all the other bands were congratulating us...until the scoring came back. The judges gave it to some other band that had a harmonica player dressed like a gnome that wandered on and off the stage during their performance.
I also remember looking at the judges during our set (we were facing them) and one of them was dead asleep the entire time we were playing.
