Smith&Nephew is indeed a crappy employer, but that's still no reason to disregard ethics.
That I.P. belongs to the company because those Engineers were paid for their work. All of their thoughts and innovations are company property, and not theirs. That's the deal they agreed to, when they decided to accept corporate employment and a steady pay check.
Their careers are now over, due to their own greed and dishonesty.
