Re: “Shelter in the Storm

I am not a Memphis/Shelby resident, but from what I have saw and heard over the years, MAS is a really bad place for innocent animals to end up at. It is like they haven't came into the 21st century. And the deal with Kapone and the ex-con who did not turn him with his sibling or report him being picked up is unacceptable by any AC or human who works for one of these facilities. I live in Middle TN and we have some fairly good ACs here. They are not perfect, but pretty good. And one of the state's best AC is a small rural area one, in Greenbrier, TN north of Nashville, Robertson County. Randy who runs this one goes above and beyond the call of duty to avoid putting an animal down. This small rural shelter has no internet. The only contact is by phone. And in 2009, he only put down 1 dog. I do not recall the number he picked up that year but it in the hundreds or so. This little shelter is truly ran by a man who cares about the animals when no one else may. Since GAC is small and has less money and staff to work with than the larger ACs do, Randy still manges to get dogs adopted, fostered and rescued. Even Metro Nashville is a better place than MAS. I have personally met several of the staff there and they too care about animals they pick up. What ever an animal does they deserve a second chance, even more if the human who took them in as pets to love and care for fails to do that. No animal should be forced to leave this world without knowing true love. Knowing what it is like to have a home where his/her people treat them as family. Warm place to sleep and a soft bed, food and water. Toys to play with and pats on the head and belly rubs. Shots and medical needs kept up to date and baths. God put these animals on this earth for us humans to love and protect, not chained, not kept in cramped quarters, not abuse or abandon or fight for money or the so call thrill until death etc. They were put here for our companioship. I see the animals God created and gave us as a perfect example of his love for us, "Unconditional" and "Forgiving". Barbara Duke, Madison, TN
