Basically, all they care about is getting their paycheck (as one employee told his supervisor when he refused to help a customer).
He may soon be asking himself, "What the heck was I thinging - coming out of retirement for THIS? I hope he walks tall and carries a big stick!! He's going to need it for some of the worthless employees!!
MAS has much more wrong with it than just the beds. And, if you think they're at full capacity, then go and take a tour. There are definitely some empty cages. Makes you wonder - what happened to all those animals that were at the old shelter????
How many in the stray area will be left alive by the time they get around to moving the animals? It will be interesting to see the stats of how many were at MAS on November 5th and how many arrive at the new shelter on November 22nd.
@ Canyon Moon - Moon..now don't go getting soft on us!! LOL I don't even know much about the "NOKILL" movement. I believe more in Low/Low Kill. It's unrealistic to believe that animals that are terminally sick or vicious should be kept alive. But, killing 4 out of every 5 animals is insane!! There are so many wonderful people in this area that truly care about the welfare of these animals (including myself) that are not welcomed at MAS because we won't go with the flow. Just recently a young lady was "fired" FROM BEING A VOLUNTEER because she crossposted pictures (which she did not take) of animals hidden in the stray area. She was fired for trying to save lives!!! That's just wrong! There's a tremendous number of very talented people who have fresh new ideas on marketing animals for adoption as well as improving their daily care. No one at City Hall or at MAS wants to listen. The folks at MAS have been around death so much that they seem insensitive to it. It even shows on their faces.
Moon, we do meet on common ground with a vested interest in shelter reform. I, too, love animals and despise cruelty in any form or fashion.
And, thanks for learning more about THS!
@ canyon moon - I'm LOL "But I find it interesting that people here are so interested in listening to a resident of one of the worst states for shelter abuse and her almost completely rural or small town pack of lemmings, but yet I can't talk about Reno, the jewel in the crown." I can only suppose you're talking about yesbiscuit. I "listen" very intently to many people, most of them are local and involved personally in the situation. I didn't say you couldn't talk about Reno, I just don't understand why you continually want to when posting to an article about MAS. We need to stay focused on our animals and what "could" work if we all tried. The status quo at MAS isn't working.
As for THS, I'll say this one more time, this was before the new shelter was completed. The shelter began in 2008 one pen at a time with no county funding; they relied solely on private donations. Sandy Williams has worked her butt off over the past several years soliciting donations and volunteers and has built a wonderful indoor/outdoor facility in Tunica. MAS could do well to learn from her dedication, compassion and tenacity. Most of all, the world would be a better place if more people loved animals as much as Sandy Williams and her sister, Gail. Not exactly sure how many they have now - there will be 1 less on Saturday when I take my foster home. Not sure when they will reach capacity, but I'm sure when they cross that bridge euthanizing animals will NOT be an option. And, before you go barking at me about fostering from THS, I have also adopted animals from MAS!
I wouldn't be so concerned about what humor Hooks, Chancellor and Towers might find in being you, but rather what traits of theirs come out in you. Prayers for the animals and for you, too, Moon!
Re: “Animal Advocacy Group Plans Protest Against Memphis Animal Services”
People should realize that this was NOT an isolated incident with the Vet...it's just the one reported. Advocates demonstrated once before because animals were being starved in the court case area. EVEN VOLUNTEERS at the shelter took their concerns to Janet Hooks & Lasonya Hall only to be dismissed. Dr. Coleman said the complaints were unfounded and the City agreed with her.
These accusations against Dr. Coleman by Memphis Animal Services (as described in records obtained through FOIA) are criminal & the District Attorney should investigate this further and charge her with animal cruelty! At the very least, she should be fired from MAS.
