I met Mr. Hampton on Main Street in Memphis today while my boyfriend (Madman Sam from The Muddy Sons) and I came for the International Blues Competition on Beale Street. Mr. Hampton showed us his carved mermaid and other carvings he was wearing - he's such a talented man who just oozes creativity. Meeting him was the highlight of my day along with the very talented sax player that first drew me over to that side of the street - I didn't get his name, but will be going back tomorrow to get his CD. Luther had me draw a picture in his sketchbook collection that he has had others draw in. I'd given him my card, as I'm a painter and he liked the painting on my business card. It was an honor to draw in his sketchbook and to hear his stories and to meet him.
