Addendum: The Yanks pretended to surrender; the black defenders were taunting Forrest's troops as they overran the fort.....they were offered quarter but refused, lo & behold, Forrests' troops drove many of them into the river where they drowned, such is war. Great victory for the Confederacy.
HEADQUARTERS, FORREST'S CAVALRY
Before Fort Pillow, April 12, 1864
Major Booth, Commanding United States Forces, Fort Pillow:
Major,--the conduct of the officers and men garrisoning Fort Pillow has been suchas to entitle them to being treated as prisoners of war. I demand the unconditional surrender of this garrison, promising you that you shall be treated as prisoners of war. My men have received a fresh supply of ammunition, and from their present position can easily assault and capture the fort. Should my demand be refused, I cannot be responsible for the fate of your command.
Major General Commanding.
Thank God for the Ku Klux Klan....I wonder if ANY of the idiots posting here have even taken the time to research their current beliefs? If so, and you denounce them, then you are a racist. Traitor to the White race. They espouse no hate, only pride in the White race. We are bombarded daily with "black Pride", gay Pride", and all manner of depraved behaviour, but let a group of White folk get together & suddenly it's a "hate Group"....Despicable! How is that hatred? Crickets?
That damn boy, Sampson, needs to get the Hell out of the South if he insults & dishonors our Southern Heros in the war of Northern Aggression....there was a reason those statues were erected in the first place; Forrest was known as the "Wizard of the Saddle", for good reason......loved by thousands, white & black alike.....OWN IT!!!
He was also elected to the Memphis City Council 3 times......and this doosh, Sampson, dares to mention Charlie Manson & Jeffrey Dahmer in the same article? What an idiot. Is it his job spreading ignorance, or what???
