The Chinese Sub Shop on Highland (By Whatever, if it hasn't moved yet.) Maybe it's actually named the "Super Submarine Sandwich Shop"?- is so good. Every year when I vote, I cannot believe they have to written in.
I always expect to see them in at least the Best Lunch category.
I'm not really sure how places are nominated. I don't know if it's an action the business takes, the Flyer, the readers, or the patrons, but do yourself a favor and go eat a Sub before they widen that road. They seem unsure about whether they'll move when that happens or close.
"Hard or soft roll?"
"You get chips."
As far as the other categories, I don't hate any of the nominees, I think it's all about preference. Maybe you like water chestnuts while they make me gag, or like food you can eat with sticks vs. someone else who wants a roll to sop gravy off their plate with.
You may love Huey's (I enjoy the place just fine) while I prefer my burgers from Velvet Cream (which I would need to write in) or Dyer's.
People enjoy themselves fully in different settings, they prefer a different ambience, I guess the word is.
What I do like is that they all contribute something positive to a city that really IS a wonderful place, but sadly is misjudged and written off many times by people who either don't explore it, or judge it by the perception they get from a distance.
So this is a good thing.
A lot of people come into Memphis specifically for Graceland, and everything around it is dirty, not so safe, abandoned, and embarrassing.
If I came here to see Elvis' house and stayed near it for convenience and only saw that spot of Memphis, I do not think I'd be back.
But, it has a lot to offer, so like I said, I appreciate seeing the participation and results each year.
