Vance, as a Messick graduate (class of 1975) now living in Louisiana, thanks for the memories.

The block of stone shown in the picture was over the front door of the original 1908 classroom building. Right above it was the original name of the school -- Elizabeth Messick County High School. The area where Messick was (and is) was annexed into Memphis in 1930, and Messick became part of the Memphis City Schools at that time -- but the "County High School" remained on the front of the building until the building was town down in 1981.
The facade at the new Chik-Fil-A is what makes Midtown more cool than the rest of city. As for Overton Square, you must not spend as much time in Midtown as your name implies, because if you did you would see just how busy the businesses in the area are. The south side of Madison definitely needs to be invested in, but invested in and razed are two different things entirely.

Could not believe there wasn't a review of this popular Indian restaurant on Germantown Parkway. The food is excellent, with a broad menu. There are lots of vegetarian items for those that won't select the non-vegetarian dinner (one of our favs). The Lamb is excellent. They have a small, but adequate wine list to accompany your dishes, and several desserts to put out the fire if you ordered your food spicy. I usually go mild to medium as my wife doesn't like things too spicy. Their service is good, they try to make your dinner an enjoyable one. The buffet on Sunday is good value.

Chris in Midtown, is this really a dying area in Midtown? Seems to me that Jackie Nichols is building an extraordinary new theatre there. Bosco's is packed all the time. Yosemite Sam's and Paulette's have been there for ages and show no signs of going away. Studio in the Square appears to be a success in every way. Maggie's Pharm is a Midtown institution. Side street Bar & Grill doesn't seem to be hurting for business. Le Chardonnay and Bayou Bar & Grill seemed to be doing just fine on the North side, and now seem to be doing just as well on the South side.

The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that Overton Square is very much alive and full of potential. There does appear to be some issue with the Fisher properties North side of the street.

I would say that the only real bottom line here is that too often we like to make pronouncements about the real bottom line before we do a thorough investigation of what's on the preceding lines.

Which truly is sad don't you think? Especially since the split school systems are a hold over from the segregation era. Why hasn't anyone ever challenged this set up anyway? You are right though.

It only makes since to me to consolidate everything. We could eliminate some positions, expand on things that are working, and get rid of those that aren't. It seems to me it could also mean better representation. If the charter was drawn up properly we could, and should have, smaller council/commission districts more indicative of the actual neighborhoods represented, thereby diluting the traditional power brokers' power. Well it all sounds good in theory anyway.
