I'm sorry. What is a Division One college coach doing talking about popping Xanax to "relieve his stress"? I was a huge Tommy West fan for years, but his behavior these past few weeks has caused me concern. He COMPLETELY trashed the university last week with his self-described "tirade" that made headlines on ESPN and made Memphis' already murky reputation worse. After that, any self-respecting AD should have sent him straight home, period the end. Then again, RC Johnson is part of the problem, not part of the solution...

You're forgetting Columbus Day and Veterans Day. Banks are closed for both and kids are usually out of school as well. There, and always will be, only 10 national holidays. That's two weeks of paid vacation! Think of the shareholders, man! They can't afford to give the serfs yet another paid day off, especially not for baseball.

Better yet, shorten the basball game. 9 innings is ridiculously long. 5 is more than enough.

Good stuff, Frank. I would suggest these changes, effective immediately:

1. No holding penalties. Do whatever it takes to play the damn game. I’d say 90% of the most dramatic punt returns in football are “brought back” because somebody grabbed another guy's jersey.

2. Bring back the “incidental” facemask rule. Just because your hand brushes a guy’s helmet is no reason to give the other team 15 yards AND a first down.

3. No “horse-collar” penalties. What is this — flag football?

4. None of these bullshit penalties like “illegal formation” or “ineligible receiver downfield.” LSU recently lost a game-winning touchdown because a guard somehow crossed the line of scrimmage without saying “Mother May I?” or something ridiculous during a spectacular 150-yard pass play. Okay, maybe it wasn't quite that long.

5. Introduce the LASSO to haul down receivers who’ve run past you. NOW we’re talking excitement!
What a wonderful article! Chris regards Memphis as his second home. He talks about the love he feels for the city, Memphis University and all of the people there who embraced him as their own. His college experience was so enriched by Memphis and he matured so much there. There are so many positive experiences that can never be overshadowed or forgotten. Thank you, Mr. Murtaugh, for the article that honors Chris' contribution to the Memphis Tigers program. He will be thrilled to hear of it. Thanks again to Memphis for making my son feel welcome and loved. You have enriched Chris' life forever.
Of the 4 NL playoff teams, the Cards had the worst record in their last 10 games, 2-8, as opposed to the Dodgers and Phils at 4-6, and the Rockies at 6-4.

Yet, to a man, the ESPN Baseball Tonight crew, all 6 of them, unanimously picked St. Louis to beat LA in the first round. I don't see it.

Oh, and despite Albert not homering in his last 21 games, he held on to with the NL homer title with 47, and led the NL in runs scored.

Minor league playoff games just don't draw. Midweek games in September are really a tough sell on a very short notice. Your writing makes it sound like this is just a Memphis problem, well that's very limited reporting that you are only doing to support your weak story premise. In the other AAA league Durham won it's championship before 1,500. That's what the boxscore said so you can only imagine what was actually in the seats. While the Redbirds attendance did drop somewhat this season, as did practically every other minor AND major league team did, they were still in the top 10 of all the minor leagues as they've been every year since AutoZone Park opened. Can't we just for once have a positive here in Memphis without someone looking under a rock to find the negative in it?

As someone who was at the Reading Phillies' lone home playoff game this year let me tell y'all this is not an isolated incident. And one of the biggest reasons you see this is because a team like the Redbirds (or R-Phils) has a set schedule that allows individuals and groups to make decisions on attending games several months in advance. By the time the playoffs comes, the rosters have been expanded by parent clubs, kids are back in school and games are announced in some cases only a few days in advance. That has as much to do with poor playoff attendance as anything else.

Not saying that AZP would have been sold out, but I definitely think the constant rain last Tuesday and Wednesday had something to do with the poor turnout. The weekday games I attended throughout the season had more fans there than during the playoffs.
