<![CDATA[Sambeaux, it's not just the soil biology that's important, it's also the micro-topography that has been created by successive generations of trees dying and decomposing. This topography creates ecological niches that support a variety of plant and animal species that would not inhabit a forest who's floor had been impacted by timber harvesting, grazing, etc. It's not hard to grasp--1st and 2nd graders get it when I take classes on field trips.

<![CDATA["Very few species of trees in the Mixed Mesophytic forest live much longer than 200-300 years but the age of trees doesn't determine the age of the forest for the forest is much more than trees alone." Which proves my point, that the article seeks to fetisize the "forest for the trees", willfully ignoring the fact that anything that old in the forest is beyond the appreciation of the common person.

With the support of the Audubon Society and the Sierra Club, I hired an ecological consulting firm to come in and perform a baseline study in 1999 in preparation for the installation of the interpretive trail and accompanying map.
