Or, he will use some of it to help his crack head son who was arrested for selling drugs at a school he worked in. (The story can be found on the net).
This Trader Joe's/Whole Foods crap is nonsense. People don't want a Target because it's a "big box" store, but they'll beg for a Whole Foods? Seems to me the real reason is that Target just isn't bourgeois enough for midtown -- do I need to remind people that WF and TJ are both chain stores as well? And don't launch into the "sound business practices" argument -- Whole Foods is a union-busting company that bought out their only rivals and their CEO is publicly fighting against any public health care option.

Austin, TX has a thriving local business community because the city has had the good sense to give local businesses priority over national ones and because communities have chosen to support them instead of seeking other options. Why can't we have the same in Memphis?

Now they can finally move ahead with hiring a top flight consultancy to conduct a multimillion dollar six year study to tell them what's wrong with the school system, again, while another entire generation of students is left behind, again. Woohoo!

If you take your best teachers and put them in the worst schools and worst classes, you'll end up driving most of them away. I see this in the business world all the time. Those who work hardest are given the most to do and carry the dead weight of dozens of others, until they finally burn out and quit, leaving the organization top-heavy with mediocre slackers whose primary talent is playing the system.

I think a good investment of this money would be to create a teacher training program to take people with a high school diploma, but who might otherwise not have a degree, people who can pass a battery of social, intellectual and psychological tests, and train them up with real world, real classroom experience to become loyal, dedicated teachers. Pay them while you train them, so they can support themselves while they learn, and you will have no shortage of hardworking people who otherwise could never manage the expense of the required four-year degree.

How many people spend 4 years to get their degree and their teaching certificate only to burn out in the first year because they haven't been properly prepared for the realities of the urban classroom? How many children lose an entire year because they are unfortunate enough to draw a teacher who is neither prepared nor motivated to meet the extraordinary demands of teaching? You take a kid in her first years of school, all it takes is one bad teacher, one lost year, to put her permanently behind, especially if she is passed on to the next grade without having learned what she needed to know in the previous grade.

Our teacher training system itself is broken. Teacher training should be done by the schools in a paid internship program. They should mix actual teaching experience with educational courses for as long as it takes to prepare that teacher to take over a classroom, whether that takes one year or six years. The current system serves one function and one function only - to deliver a steady supply of students and their tuitions to four-year colleges and their masters and doctorate of education programs. (No doubt the master teacher level will require a master's degree.)

While it is hoped that the Memphis City Schools will receive the Gates Foundation Grant, the effectiveness of our teachers will be greatly undermined by the proposed elimination of teacher assistants in order to cut $2 million from the MCS budget. This is in addition to the elimination of 149 English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers last year. Our students and teachers need institutional support to provide: 1. limited classroom size with a reasonable teacher/student ratio; 2. teacher assistants in primary grades and other special classes; 3. English as a Second Language teachers in all schools; 4. designated time each day for planning and preparation for classes. Even the most outstanding teachers will become ineffective if their classes are too large or they have too many classes per day or too many students who do not understand English. Supt. Cash has also proposed extending the school year for an additional month, which is not a bad idea in itself. However, these other four support measures should be implemented first during the initial 180 days of school before adding just more days.

I think it is a great idea. As for the trolley and the Square, I believe the plans only went as far as the medical center area because that was as far as the federal dollars would take it, I could be mistaken though.

The one thing about the trolley is that it is unavailable after 10 or 11pm, which makes Midtown to Downtown and back again barhopping nearly impossible. That's without even going into the erratic wait times.
I was at the meeting too. It had to be explained to me that "museum" does not mean what it used to mean. This is not a museum in the general sense but there's no term for what this is, more of a children's activity center.

Something like this had been done -- in 1979!! When Downtown was hurting for people MATA created the "Hustle Bus" (disco era, you know) which charged a $.10 fare from the Medical Center to Downtown and had several that made a loop back and forth. I am not sure how long it lasted.

I think they should split the downtown and midtown loops and include the emerging broad avenue arts district. And I don't see it working without a fleet of shuttles. One will be way slower than the trolley.

Yeah, I was about to ask about the trolley. Why they stopped it in front of a dry cleaner's instead of running it all the way down to Overton Square, which pretty much seems like it was made to have a trolley, is a mystery to me.

Will this private bus be screening the passengers first, or something?

It's a shame that they can't work with MATA to increase the service level provided by the Madison Ave. trolley in conjunction with the shuttle idea. Linking a trolley line with far more frequent service than is provided at present with a shuttle that can provide more frequent stops across a wider area would be a holistic approach to connecting the dots in the city center.
