Or we could just let the atheletes go pro. Keep the sports programs, but let the best atheletes not have to do a mandatory year of compensation-free play before going pro. Seriously, what possible good does forcing them to go one year do for that player? None at all. They gain nothing by going to college for one year. It isn't going to help them in the future in their post-sports career. All it does is provide some college program with one free year of a pro-level player's life, from which the college makes millions of dollars, instead of the player who is earning it.

I've mentioned it before, but I'll say it again. Look at soccer. Sure, there are college soccer programs and there are college soccer players who go on to play pro. But there aren't any rules in pro soccer that force players to attend one year of college. The youngest player playing pro soccer right now is, I believe, 14. I think he plays for a Mexican team. There are other very young players. The pro teams in Europe (and probably elsewhere) have training programs for gifting young atheletes, and they invest a lot of money bringing up kids through the program, teaching them the skills they need to play soccer.

No one is Europe is arguing that these kids need to go to college and get their degrees. What we do here with our college-to-pro track is utterly hypocritical. Those kids need to go to college, not to get their degrees, but to give the college the opportunity to earn big bucks on the backs of uncompensated players. Don't tell me they're compensated by being given a free education. If their education was what it was all about, the NBA and the NFL wouldn't allow them to enter the draft until they completed their college degrees. The one year requirement would be a joke, if it didn't stink so badly of indentured servitude. College should be for learning, and any sports associated with college should be truly amateur.

And one day, everybody will get a pony.
What needs to change is not the game of football but the mega-business of exploiting football players.

Make Sports a degree program just like music, let those students study and perform and compete in track, fencing, or football just like they do in voice piano, or french horn.
Give those that pass the coursework a diploma, and let the small percent who can, make their careers after graduation.

This article is ridiculous. Why try to make something that is loved by so many in this community better when you could just do away with it. What if these things were said. The loraine motel is an eyesore, just tear it down. The peabody has been closed for years, just get rid of it. Overton square is where it's at, why would silky want to move to crappy old Beale street. These are situations where things that seamingly had no potential were given a chance and some sound investment and are now icons of Memphis. The Memphis football program could be great with some foresight and smart investment for the future. What do I know, just get rid of it.

Excellent points John. If we all agree that to begin to be more competitive, U of M needs to be in a BCS conference, then a dollar amount for consideration and debate needs to be put out there for 1. Getting into a conference, and 2. Being competitive there.

I would suggest that, in the midst of SEC country, Memphis will continue to struggle, even if the school gets into a BCS conf. like the Big East. And, if you agree with me that Memphis football will struggle to win/make money even in something like the Big East (or anywhere less than the SEC or Big 12), then why don't we fold up the football shop? Why enter the college-athletics arms race with the SEC and instead put that money somewhere else?

I love love love football and consider myself a U of M fan. Take the $XX million budgeted annually for football and divert it toward being a top 20 or 30 research school. Why couldn't we be one? Then that kind of thing pays dividends for the whole community, not just the one-tenth of the population that actually likes the football team.

Memphis could be on the leading edge of a positive trend. We could be a exemplar for the whole higher-education industry. Or we can have an average of 5 or 6 wins a year (or 7 in a good year) for the rest of our lives. Seems stupid.

I guess it becomes infinitely easier to be a "truth teller" as you walk away pocketing over $2 million after holding it all inside for 9 years making a million a year. Agreed, everything he said is true but to lionize him for it is a bit naive. Still, maybe the surface nature of the lambaste is what it will take to get the U of M serious about spending good money after spending bad (see above amounts for the "bad").

This makes no sense. A few years ago, the UofM was averaging 40000 people per game. When the program is successful the people come. Sure there were only 4k people at the ECU game, because we are currently not a winning program. The fans sent a message, bigtime. Everyone is WAY over dramatizing this whole thing... the U of M will hire a new coach... probably a really good one. Success will come. Negativity is so rampant in this community. There is no balance of optimism. That is really unfortunate. I agree with John Calipari that there are way to many "Miserables" around here... it is almost like people enjoy when the U of M fails.

Football will never be allowed to die at U of M, even if it made sense economically for the school. Why? Politics. Don't believe me? When the University had money to build an on campus athletic facility what happened? Arms were twisted from Nashville to Memphis and the money was put into the Pyramid. Great investment huh? When the Forum was built, arms were twisted and poof...the U of M plays there at a significant monentary disadvantage to what they had before. So why won't football be allowed to build an on campus stadium or quietly die? The Liberty Bowl. The U of M is the sole tenant, so there is no way the politicians are going to let another venue sit quiet. The U of M has suffered economically at the state level (because it's not UT), but worse it's been hijacked on the local level as well and made to do things that are in the interest of the city/county, but not in the best interest of the school. So, the Sparks folks would have to put that in the equation too.

Oops, I wanted these words from the article that appears as the Hyperlink to be in the box-

..."With the help of the former Cassius Clay, Miller began trying to revitalize the neighborhood in 1979 by opening a movie theater, the Mohammed Ali Cinema. By 1982, the city of Memphis leased the Beale Street Historic District to the development company for $10 million in federal grants.

The development company signed a 52-year sublease on all of the Beale Street property from 2nd to 4th Streets (with the exception of BSDC office space and the Old Daisy building) with the Elkington & Keltner company to maintain the common areas (sidewalks, street, parking lots), hold and promote special events in street, and act as the landlord for buildings and business in the district.

Beale 1983Beale Street as it looked to John Elkington in 1983.
When manager John Elkington came to Beale, his first impressions were of a war zone. The former Vanderbilt University linebacker still has a picture of the fenced-in street covered in sand, surrounded by boarded-up buildings.

Seven years later, Elkington wrote a letter to a city official which appeared in the Memphis Commercial Appeal that said the city-owned Beale Street district should be sold to private owners upon renovation to help recoup the $13 million in public money invested in the project..."

Do I think this is the way of the future? Yes. I just want to know is there some master plan here? How will this help with the rudimentary skills that the students are lacking? Will homework have to be turned in via email? How will this affect those without net access at home? I am not trying to be cynical, I would just like to know how this is going to improve the kids' education? That is the single most important factor.

My parting shot in my first post was in fun. I do agree that no matter how many safeguards are in place there will always be the smart ass that breaks the rules. A lot like the message boards here!!! ;)

I think speculation on both sides is heading in the direction of over the top. Paperless is probably inevitable. Done well it could be a great thing. But my twins got their first blog at six and their first laptops and email accounts at seven. We think it's good to raise them with technology teaching responsibility all along the way.

There is potential disaster lurking everywhere. That lunchbox may be full of fritos or full of pot. All useful tools are just as useful to our malefactors. I'm not taking a stand one way or the other. I don't know the service so I just can't say. I do know that our culture shows no signs of becoming less computerized. An that there haven't been quills and inkwells in the classroom for some time
