sankara, I will let someone more dispassionate address the preparation strategy of Mr Jaggers. You are correct in noting that many of these questions are not ideal for reading out loud, especially in a television environment.

Greg, there's a Sting joke in here somewhere that involves Jaggers and Ranta doing the nose swipe, but I can't find it this morning. However, I did note that FACS had no alternatives...? "Our team's on the floor, TV man!" Hard not to root for these frosty assassins disguised as GWTW enthusiasts; hide in plain sight, indeed.

Herrington: I NEVER make up a mascot name. That stuff is deadly serious to me.

How I arrived at Honey Bees is a long and convoluted story, but, basically, it's what appears as their nickname most often online. (The mascot is never referenced on the official Hutchison website, so far as I can tell.) My reputation called into question, I checked with some high-school-age kids who would likely know and they confirmed: Honey Bees. STILL wanting to be sure, I just called Hutchison.

They said that Honey Bees is the nickname — for the really young kids there. The upper school girls though, they're the Sting. D'oh. I'm disappointed. Hutchison Honey Bees is awesome, for kids of all ages.

      Great match!

Three Thoughts:

1. FACS has emerged as the most intriguing early team: Freshman captain, Gone With the Wind-reading cheerleader, jovial guy who got the "Windsor change" pun, nice girl who just loves Memphis and wants to teach in Memphis City Schools. And three underclassmen! One to watch, this year and next.

2. At the risk of breaking the unspoken communal rule about being nice to the kids, I was disappointed that no one got the algebra question. I did it in my head! This was one of the moments — truly one of the few so far — when, from my vantage point on the couch, I longed to be back in the arena.

3. I'm assuming you just made up the mascot name for Hutchison, Akers. Shame on you!

Not sure if this was officially a malapropism, but I'm pretty sure Jaggers wants back the comment, "I better be careful then" after the very strange lighting round question about where a naked man was arrested recently.

Do you think there is any out loud reading of the questions prior to the broadcast? Not only does Jaggers need to practice, but some of the questions that may look good to the question writers on paper come out very awkward when read aloud. Jaggers delivery doesn't help, but some of the questions are inscrutable before they even get to his lips.

Plus, all my holiday shopping could be done at the Alumni Center & Gift Shoppe. DVDs of complete seasons would be a must (the imagination staggers at the possibilities for "director's cuts"). I'd also like to see the MSKBC host an adaptive working mock-up of the Knowledge Bowl set, so future Bowlers could get a feel for the buzzers at an early age. Corporate branding by the sponsors everywhere, of course, in the interests of synergy and other vital catch phrases of our times.

R3: Thanks for your comments, and I would be very very very interested in a hi-res jpeg pic of that flag. Call me at the Flyer office if such a thing is feasible.

Underhills: My stomach turned when I checked out that website. Please do your part in ensuring the Flyer's KB coverage never reaches that point.

AnonymousTeamCaptain: My condolences on your loss. Will there be a fourth year for you, or are you a graduating senior? Never forget: There's a place for you in this world as a Knowledge Bowl alum.

Smartgirlsrule: Thanks for your comments! I've got the St. Benny/St. Mary's tilt circled as a winner-takes-tournament type of matchup. Should make for some real drama.

And I'd take you up on the office pool, except for the disclaimer, always in effect, that Knowledge Bowl coverage and brackets are for entertainment purposes only. Please, no wagering. Especially if you're on or coaching a team! Knowledge Bowl doesn't need some kind of Pete Rose or Shoeless Joe Jackson scandal. Although that would legitimize KB in the eyes of sports fiends...

One witty bon mot does not eclipse his malaprostagisms. Looking at this match's teams, at least Jaggers had a chance to pronounce (most of) their names correct...?

You're on the right track with KBQ, Greg. Veteran campaigners know that missed questions count heavily against a team, not just because of the opportunity at hand but also for the diverted momentum. Dork Bowl is a psychological game, especially when the teams are more evenly matched, and missed questions sap that psychological capital.

Even if the Bartlett boys don't go too far in this year's tournament, their band can play my prom any old time. You want to talk mash-ups, how about the championship final with the Bartlett boys doing the soundtrack, a la the fiery denouement of ELIZABETHTOWN? I want to see that almost as much as Dork Bowl highlights during halftime of Monday Night Football voiced by Howard Cosell.

What about a betting line, particularly for second round matches and deeper into the tournament...? Point spreads should be easier to generate by then.

Mostly, I want a betting line for the possibility of a point-shaving scandal, but if Jimmy the Greek came up out of his grave to give his picks as part of a pre-game show with Irv Cross and Phyllis George, we'll know KB has finally arrived. Respect!

Performance-enhancing drugs are sure to follow, as reaction times to the buzzer destroy previous norms and teams shatter the envelope of quadruple-digit scoring totals and that demon that lives in the unknown beyond 999. Recruiting abuses will be uncovered. The sporting public will scorn Knowledge Bowl, turning their favor instead to untainted competition of four-square and tetherball. KB veterans will talk of their ancient campaigns in the good old days, fueled only by Mountain Dew and anxiety about bad on-camera hair, back when it was still a game...

Until then, though, let's enjoy the hell out of this. I sure am.

Britt, KB producer/director, showed me your blog after recording the shows this past Monday evening. Just got a chance to actually look through it. Very pleased that you are covering this competition where, as FlyerFan 60 said, nothing bounces but incorrectly answered questions. I try hard not to laugh at some of the answers (think I am doing better these days) but sometimes it is hard to choke a laugh down because some are so funny. As to the state Quiz bowl or whatever, did it start prior to 1987? Knowledge Bowl has been around giving scholarship rewards to bright, hard-studying students for 23 years now. KB started when no one was doing anything like this in town. It also gives the thousands of Saturday viewers that tune into News Channel 3's Knowledge Bowl notice that the competing schools can be proud of what they were constructed to do in the first place, educate our students, not just chase balls. It is now even copied by corporations, leadership groups, and other student quiz competitions. In 1989 the show was recognized by United States President's Citation Program for the Private Sector and received a "C-Flag" for "outstanding contributions to the American spirit of volunteerism and community action." The slogan on the flag might be of interest to you as it sounds very much like a more recent slogan, the flag bore the slogan "We Can - We Care". Even in these tough time, WREG-TV and the sponsors of KB still do.

Anyway, the buzzer has gone off and my round if finished. Good luck on your predictions. R3

Great list, and as a long time PJ fan, i agree with most of your choices. But. And it's a big But. To me, Vs. is their second best album. As such, I'd like to see more from that. Leash is the song I think of most when it comes to capturing their live sound in a studio song. And Indifference haunts me to this day.
Other than that minor complaint, this list is great for new Pearl Jam fans.
P.S. Back Spacer is BY FAR their best studio album of the last several years. I think you'll like it. :)

Welcome to the party, everybody. Your comments are very much appreciated.

I'm very curious about your thoughts, Julie. For whatever reason, my team didn't play Quiz Bowl, so I must admit a total blind spot when it comes to that competition. What do those teams compete for? Do they also get scholarships/bonds/parting gifts? What do the points go toward for advancing Quiz Bowl teams?

As for including SAT/ACT/IQ/Height/Weight/40 time/sibling data: I'd love to do all of it. Impossible and probably illegal to accumulate/disseminate that data. Worry not, though: I'm working on a metric to satisfy the stat nerds in the audience.
