Vance, as a Messick graduate (class of 1975) now living in Louisiana, thanks for the memories.

The block of stone shown in the picture was over the front door of the original 1908 classroom building. Right above it was the original name of the school -- Elizabeth Messick County High School. The area where Messick was (and is) was annexed into Memphis in 1930, and Messick became part of the Memphis City Schools at that time -- but the "County High School" remained on the front of the building until the building was town down in 1981.

I checked the property records and there is no 5201 Poplar listed. the next business to the west is Jimmy Johns Sandwiches at 5181 Poplar. Property records online show a 5191 Poplar listed is listed as built in 1968, the same year Roy Rodger's website said they opened their first restaraunts, plus the building looks more Western than Tropical. So smart money is on Tropical Freeze having been a different building.

So can I fill in when you go on vacation?

Devin, did the Tropical Freeze "become" the Roy Rogers, or was it demolished and rebuilt as a new place entirely? That seems to be part of the mystery here. You can see remnants of the original stone wall that once stood behind the building, but I'm not sure if any other parts of the complex remain on the site.

This is absolutely hilarious! I love the "available by private appointment only." I suppose one could and should check their busy social calendar to schedule the exact moment they would fall down their gold-gilded winding staircase or plunge into the raging waters of their private pool after tripping over "Fi-fi." Thank-you, Vance, for starting my day off with a good laugh!

I grew up in Memphis (born 1961) and remember enjoying this show and have thought about it from time to time. I remember Mr. Be riding in to the station as the engineer in a real train and being in a plywood train at the station. I also remember Ponce de Lion and Mr. Be reading a story about a troll that wouldn't let the goats across a bridge to get to the grass to graze on the other side - somehow the goats tricked the troll. I wish there was a way to get a copy of an episode or an entire series because it was an entertaining show that served well for children's fantasies.

I had a Ms. DeShazo in the county school systems back in the 1960s. She would visit the classrooms once a week, as I recall. She played the auto-harp while the class was supposed to sing along. Since she was our music teacher, and since she played an instrument, and since her name was "DeShazo" I'm banking that she was somehow related to this family. This was at Scenic Hills Elementary.
