I don't think failing to ban anon comments just because of people commenting at work is a good idea. You shouldn't be commenting at work anyway. The main concern, to me, is the way employers are now looking everyone up on the internet, whether as pre-employment screening or seeing what their current employees do. If you argued that standing by your comments is less punk-ish or adds to the quality of discussion vs creating juvenile name-calling prior to the days when identifying yourself on the internet could cost you a job...maybe I'd agree. But nowadays you can post something you think is perfectly harmless or is just an honest, well-put opinion, but, especially if it's on politics, race, sexual orientation or religion, someone can and will hold it against you. One of these entertainment magazines only allows comments via facebook right now, which most people have their real name on...I have shied away from commenting on a few of those articles just because of that. I do not really need my name tied with an article on something as relatively trivial as Tila Tequila, Paris Hilton, Megan Fox, etc, even if it's just me commenting that no one cares about those people. Someone would form a negative opinion about the fact that I even bothered to comment.

Kirantana: Actually, nothing is screened, but every comment is reviewed and most egregiously offensive ones are not up very long. Occasionally, we miss one, but usually someone will email and let me know or "report" the comment using the handy "report this comment" function just below. I'm honestly impressed by how civil this community is most of the time. Those who come here as Quixotes hoping to convert an audience of primarily progressive/liberal thinkers into Glenn Beck acolytes get what they're seeking-- attention and derision -- or they wouldn't keep coming back.

Everything we read in here is screened anyway...so I'm wondering why Bruce would ask the question...he must get some nasty dark shit that we never see. I find most the people in here to be intelligent and witty, if I agree with them is never the point. I'm one of those people who appreciates the "craft" of words, they can be an amazing magic to me. This can be relaxing, and often fun. It would be a shame to cut out some people because of work constraints, or other personal reasons. All my friends have "handles" in the bike world. Besides, I'm telepathic...I know who you all are anyway....haaaa.....Dreaded Gombu sees all

Maybe the CA should ban some of their commenters, but I don't see there being much of a problem here. The biggest nuisance you've got here is CHG, but at least that guy is semi-coherent and trying to make sense some of the time.

The big problem with anonymity, in my eyes, is not the level of vitriol it unleashes (since when have I ever had a problem with that?) but the opportunities for dishonestly it opens up. It's too easy to create a sock puppet or simply impersonate someone else and cause incredible mischief with a free, wide-open account creation process. People shouldn't have to say who they are, but they should be required to say that they are the same person they said they were the last time they said so.

To avoid detection I keep the same screen name, but I change my real identity at least once a month. Besides, just about everyone I know, including some underlings at The Flyer, know who I am. A week ago I was having a beer at my favorite neighborhood bar. There was a writer from The Flyer there. I made a joke about his favorite food (learned from these here pages). His immediate reponse was something to the effect of "Are you 38103". Now this particular writer and I have had a few bouts here. I am pretty sure that I won them all. But I am still hanging on to 38103. Afterall, I just like the digits.

In theory, I think a man (or woman) should be willing to publicly stand behind what he writes on a public forum. That includes disclosing his real name, hometown and phone number and/or street address. (All of which are often required when readers submit letters to the editor to mainstream newspapers.)

In practice, however, banning anonymous comments on newspaper websites would tremendously dissuade feedback from people who are at work, especially if they tend to post comments that their employers might not agree with. (That's the only reason I post under a fake name.)

But even though it might make sense for news outlets to allow anonymous comments on their websites, I think it's highly irresponsible for news outlets to routinely quote these comments in their newscasts and newspapers. In my opinion, publishing/broadcasting an anonymous website comment is akin to publishing/broadcasting a comment or a tip from an unnamed source, which most mainstream news outlets still generally try to avoid doing. Yet many of these same news outlets seem to have no qualms about publishing/broadcasting website comments submitted by folks who hide behind fake names like "Muskrat" and "Boogerholler."
