      <![CDATA[Anemia will do that to you. Although sometimes it's ice that an anemic person will crave. Had a friend who craved corn starch. Once the anemia is corrected, the craving goes away.

      <![CDATA[Jeff, you're right. Several people have told me that a medical condition called "pica" causes unnatural craving for clay and dirt — the body is subconsciously trying to replace much-needed minerals. And apparently eating dirt can actually help the digestive system — sort of like a dog eating grass, I suppose. Of course, if you eat away a whole portion of the riverbluff, you are probably overdoing it.
