Bruce: I'm a big fan of Memphis, having now lived here for nearly 30 years, but I, too, lived in "the 'burg" and although there are many apt comparisons between the two cities (i.e., both river towns, both at the confluence of three state boundaries, etc.), there are two things about Pittsburgh that will always give it an advantage over Memphis (and which are major factors in the "misery" category): first, it has never had the kind of poverty Memphis suffers from, and the corollary, namely it has never had the kind of crime Memphis suffers from.

Also, it has always been an educational epicenter, with 20-some institutions of higher learning (several, highly ranked), and it remains one of the cities with the greatest concentrations of Fortune 500 companies, outside of New York or Chicago.

The only question I have about this is why we didn't care when we were #2 last year, but we are fired up about being #3 this year?

I'm happy in Memphis.
