Overton Square sits empty because the landlord refused to perform maintenance or to renew anyone's lease in order to sell. I don't think that The Bayou was jumping at leaving a prosperous locale and shelling out the money to move across the street, but the did...same for Fantastic Sam's relocation.

I hate to belabor the point but I think the previously proposed plans for OS, to which I've posted a link, are already somewhat pedestrian friendly. I would love to see drawings that MH would approve of, that would also be attractive to businesses that have a reasonable chance of survival in midtown.

And let's not kid ourselves.

I didn't state it that way for a reason, although I understand you had no way of knowing that I'm a life-long Memphian and am obviously aware that Memphis has many very old and very good restaurants.
I am fully aware that there are many restaurants that have been around for more than 30 years but Coletta's and Jim's Place East are hardly in what would be considered dining/entertainment destinations. Centers of entertainment rise and fall naturally.

By your logic, which isn't true, btw, every dining corner in Memphis will fail. CY isn't destined to fail as a neighborhood anchor b/c some restaurants currently located there may go out of business, hell that's ALREADY happened.

Some 30+ year dining "destinations" that come easily to mind are Paulette's (wow--in Overton Square, even), Pete 'n Sam's, Jim's Place East (which, according to an article in the Daily News, has been around for 90 years), and Coletta's (which, according to their web site, has been around since 1923). Come to think of it, Yosemite Sam's (believe it or not, also in Overton Square) has been around for at least that long.

I'm all for preservation, but I wouldn't call Overton Square either historically or architectually significant. You could make an arguement for the 100-year-old church, but not so much for Overton Square.
