Marty, the CA has always claimed to be turning a profit. But newspapers have been genuinely struggling.

Chris: it has always been a well-kept secret of the newspaper business, especially in smaller-market cities, that they've had profit margins most other businesses would die for. Are you telling me all that's suddenly (or even gradually) gone poof, even (but especially) at the CA, which continues to enjoy a monopoly, has downsized substantially (how substantially is something else we don't know, though we do know it always has a salutary effect on the bottom line of businesses who do so), and whose ad rates are still, I suspect, the envy of the industry?

Without seeing their financials (the absence of which from public scrutiny Branston has rightly bemoaned for years), how can we be sure?

Reporting? You are kidding I hope.

Taking in to account what passes for reporting at the CA, it's no wonder that Mr Peck not only reads the Flyer, but even sends in a letter to the editor.

Hey, Chris: how 'bout telling us what the CA's (not Scripps's) operating results were. Or are you afraid that, if you did, folks might see through all the paper's "poor me" bellyaching, its heavy-handedness with its union, and its outsourcing much of what it does, including reporting?
