I'm all for a 20 percent reduction in government! What a bold and promising opportunity we have here in Memphis with this new charter!

I think the Louisville example (most recent) and the Nashville example (same state) are the two best to consider for our case in Metro Memphis.

Ok TJones I agree with your points, but this charter specifically does not address rebuilding a better school system, eliminating the duplication it purports to, nor create new, community oriented representative districts. Sure we'll have one government body to deal with, but that body will be grossly bloated and therefore twice as inefficient as what we have now.

I hesitate to dispute anything Jimmie Covington says, but there is a clear correlation between effectiveness of government and population growth, as our research has often shown. And more to the point, every mayor in the past 20 years in Nashville and in business leadership says its effectiveness form of government was key to its growth in people and jobs.

Offering a more organized and streamlined government is a benefit to us all not just business leaders. As a supporter my hope is that the items detailed in the charter like a neighborhood commission and the stronger focus on economic development will act as a catalyst to make us a competitive/attractive community again.

The "one voice" argument from the Louisville Mayor makes perfect sense. Competing governments are not attractive to new business and industry.

In Culver City, the website for their city school has all teacher email links that WORK with no excuses, a page where you can get your student's daily homework downloaded in case they forgot it, plus, all upcoming assignments, plus advanced warning on projects coming due, links to sporting events calendar, EVERYTHING about their school is available online updated daily.
School calendars are updated as needed,
Homework is updated as needed, daily or planned stuff as needed,
Sports events updated as needed,
Calendar for meetings and school functions are updated as needed.
Every MCS school could pull that off!
There is no excuse for not doing it in 2010 and you don't have to have an IT guy for every school to do that.
Some of your local politicians are using drug money gained by school drug sales to your kids to fuel their campaigns, that needs to stop too.
Those 92,000 students are the most that will attend, they drop off from opening, not pick up. It's well known by the board that there are not 100,000 students attending, we lose 3-4000 students per year and we never get them back.

Is an MCS education worth $10,000/year?
Hell no it isn't!
