"where it exists" -- the slave power in the South, as clearly expressed by Jefferson Davis (among countless others) at the time, thought that the threat to the spread of slavery was a threat to the institution where it already was (and he was right to think so) and wrote of the coming of the war in terms of "self-preservation". The slave power in the South saw opposition to slavery in the territories as an act of aggression against them and as a threat their economy and culture, which they saw as absolutely inseparable from the institution of slavery.

I have one more Alexander H. Stephens quote for you. It's from his infamous "Cornerstone Speech" and it should leave no doubt as to why the Civil War was fought.

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.

So both sides agreed that there was nothing wrong with owning slaves, and yet I'm wrong to assume that the war wasn't fought over slaves?
That seems illogical.

As a side note to an earlier comment, there was a movement among Shelby County residence to secede from Tennessee and join Mississippi when the initial efforts for Tennessee's secession from the union failed.
