"Otherwise, why would so many black southerners fight for the confederacy?" Perhaps because the facts are that the vast majority of blacks "fought" for the COnfederacy in "support" roles; i.e., they were either commandeered en masse to dig and construct fortifications, bury the dead, etc., OR they followed their masters as individuals because they were SLAVES to serve their masters in war.

It's pathetic that this is still a point of argument and it's groan-worthy how the dubiously motivated deniers of slavery's centrality in the Civil War can make their arguments in such a patronizing manner while being so willfully wrong, but, "JSleezy44," you might want to take a very close look at the fine print in that Lincoln quote you cite as evidence: “I declare that I have no intention, directly or indirectly, to interfere with slavery in the states where it exists.”

"where it exists" -- the slave power in the South, as clearly expressed by Jefferson Davis (among countless others) at the time, thought that the threat to the spread of slavery was a threat to the institution where it already was (and he was right to think so) and wrote of the coming of the war in terms of "self-preservation". The slave power in the South saw opposition to slavery in the territories as an act of aggression against them and as a threat their economy and culture, which they saw as absolutely inseparable from the institution of slavery.

I have one more Alexander H. Stephens quote for you. It's from his infamous "Cornerstone Speech" and it should leave no doubt as to why the Civil War was fought.

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition.

Abraham Lincoln wrote to Alexander H. Stephens of Georgia on 22 December 1860, just 2 days after South Carolina seceded, “ Do the people of the South really entertain fears that a Republican administration would, directly or indirectly, interfere with their slaves, or with them about their slaves? If they do, I wish to assure you, as once a friend, and still, I hope, not an enemy, that there is no cause for such fears.” Later at his inaugural address in March 1861 Lincoln said: “I declare that I have no intention, directly or indirectly, to interfere with slavery in the states where it exists.”

So both sides agreed that there was nothing wrong with owning slaves, and yet I'm wrong to assume that the war wasn't fought over slaves?
That seems illogical.

Yes, states' rights were definitely a central issue to the Civil War; the right of certain states to continue the slavery system. There is little doubt to the complexities involved that led us to outright war, but to simply deny that slavery was not a core issue is unrealistic and historically inaccurate.

As a side note to an earlier comment, there was a movement among Shelby County residence to secede from Tennessee and join Mississippi when the initial efforts for Tennessee's secession from the union failed.

There should be a huge statue of Fannie Hamer in the state capitol building in Jackson, MS. What courage that woman had; and what depravity and hatred had those who opposed her. As for screedman and CHG, they should get together and have a pity party for the poor put-upon white man, who after all, built this country all by himself, with no contributions from anyone else.

The Civil Rights Movement was our 3rd American Revolution. Of your heroes I am particularly in awe of Ms Hamer.

I want to take the opportunity to respond to the comments posted by CHG and Screenman. The majority of African-Americans who live in large, dysfunctional urban areas like Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, and Memphis are productive, hard working, law-abiding citizens.
