No amount of numeric chicanery is going to change the fact that public education hasn't been designed to educate young people for decades.

It is merely a method of transferring tax dollars, most of which enriches the wealthy long before a tiny amount of it could benefit the students.

Remember that the old system was producing men and women of distinction and achievement long before we had multiple functionaries making almost 6 figures, or Superintendents with limos, bodyguards ,and private armies, as well as base salaries that outstrip the Governor's.

All that this consolidation smoke and mirrors is going to produce is business as usual, and the next generation of underpaid teachers and overpaid journos.

You fail to address some rather valid points made by Ms. Kiner. That you piggy-backed on Supt. Cash's comparison is a rather minor issue here.

      Mr. Branston,

After reading Leaning “Undecided” in the Memphis Flyer on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, I found your comments rely on a number of unstated assumptions that need to be addressed.

As the current principal of Booker T. Washington High School, I have some insights to share with you about my school; I have listed my issues with your statements below:

You said: “Or that Cash recently tossed out some numbers from an inner-city school that look as fishy as Derrick Rose's SAT score?” That analogy was about as necessary as Brett Favre sending those scandalous picture texts to the massage therapist. But more importantly you have made an implicit accusation of dishonesty, which demeans the work the students and staff at BTW have done to achieve the unbelievable scores.

You said: “The inner-city school lost enrollment when the neighboring housing projects were torn down.” The Clearborne Homes housing projects are not slated to be torn down until this spring 2011, and all but 32 families have moved out already.
