Running is both a solitary pursuit as well as one which invites a spirit of camaraderie and can serve as a catalyst for enduring friendships. A sizable contingent of friends, family, admirers, former coach, and fellow runners witnessed an humble runner on stage for his finale after logging in excess of 80,000 miles during a most memorable tenure.

John: While Mike's accomplishments as a runner are clearly prodigious, am I not correct in recalling (from publicity at the time) that Mike was told years ago, by his doctors, to stop running, yet ignored their advice, with the result that he eventually wore away the padding in his heels (something, I take it, that isn't common or easy to do). Are we to admire him for that?
