From the World Health Organization:

"In addition to the direct costs of road injuries and deaths, the increase in the number of vehicles and reliance on certain transport policies have other serious health implications as well as wider social, economic and environmental impacts (22). In some countries, air pollution from road transport causes even more deaths than those resulting from traffic accidents (23).

When many that have destinations on them (stores, restaurants, churches and businesses) have no option for someone on a bike to not be harassed by drivers then they can be just as daunting. Going with the comparison- sure you can drive your car down that trail, but it’s going to be bumpy, and dangerous with other people who are not going to be very hospitable to you driving down it.

There is no way in hell I'm going to ride my bike from Midtown to downtown right now. There are no striped bike lanes between the 2 neighborhoods (at least from my neighborhood to downtown or anywhere other than the U of M) and until I am assured that measure of safety you can forget it.

You might have done a better job of informing readers and yourself of the reasons people are pushing for bike lanes in Memphis in the first place. We're the not the first city with a growing population eager to eschew pains at the pump and taxing commutes for bikes.

I hate to say it, but you sound a little old in this piece. Believe it or not, there is a growing segment of the population that would ride to the store, the movie and to the restaurant if the facilities to make it a safer bet were there.
