It doesnt matter what percentage of total federal taxes they are paying, their tax rates have been cut in half since Reagan!

Even if the top 10% are paying 60-70 % of all fed taxes, they are paying very low tax rates. The main reason they pay that much is the growing concentration of wealth and income, there are more of them at the top, and growing number of the worki g class has seen their wages decline and 20 million have no jobs now, while Wall Street speculators and CEOs continue to keep more and more wealth and pay less taxes.

Military spending is almost HALF of descretionary spending, including the "defense" budget, and funding for the wars (which has not been included in the defense budget until Obama), and corporate welfare programs like "Medicare Part D" etc...

Social Security has NOTHING to do with the deficit or the national debt, it has a separate "trust fund" that has a $3 trillion surplus. The right-wing is lying about SS, their real goal is to kill it and all the New Deal programs and they are trying to create a false crisis to do it.

Capital gains rates are at historic low levels, you cannot seriously maintain that people who glean most of their income from capital gains are "overtaxed."

Before the wing-nuts jump in, they like to point out that the top 10% pay about 40% of total federal taxes and that most people who are NOT rich do not pay taxes at all. It is true that recent tax changes has eliminated federal taxes for many low-income workers, but if you add in state and local taxes, and payroll taxes for Social Security (which is NOT taxed on incomes over $90,000), then the non-wealthy pay about the same in total taxes.

And the top 10% pay a large share of the total federal tax bill because of the large concentration of wealth in the United States.
