At Jeff:Genesis 9:3 says "Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you".I think that shows that God intended for us to use His other creations for sustenance when paired with tasty veggies on the plate.
At Bruce VanWyngarden:Heed what the others have said about discharging even a BB gun inside city limits.Sure, you might be a good shot but all it takes is one neighbor calling the police on you to end it.
Though I hunt squirrels, rabbits and other game, around my house(inside the city limits) I use live traps baited with peanut butter, honey, molasses, pecans,"squirrel corn" or whatever I think the little rodents will want badly enough to get into the trap to eat.
I take the detainees to the neighborhood school to release. The squirrels which already live there will deal with the territorial intrusion & the hawks & other birds of prey that I see down there will find additional selections to the menu as they fly overhead.

At Bruce,Heed what others have said about discharging even a BB gun inside the city limits.Friends and I used to hunt off Covington Pike until a cop saw us with our .22s walking home & told us that he didn't want to see us with them again. He even made time to visit our street to follow up with our parents.
Even though I hunt,I use live traps & peanut butter, honey, molasses,or whatever I think the little rodents will go for.Since I live inside the city limits,I release them down at the neighborhood school. The squirrels that already live their will deal with the intrusion & the hawks & other birds of prey will get a variation in their meal selection.

I didn't check all the links in the squirrel commentary, so if this is repetitive I apologize: I've heard that a simple fabric softener sheet tied to the avenue of approach will repel rats, squirrels, and mice. Even if they only stop and sniff, at least it will give you a chance for a shot with the BB pistol.

Face it, though: when it comes to squirrels, they're all Bugs Bunnys and we're all Elmer Fudds.

A HUMANE way to keep squirrels off your feeder is to replace the regular birdseed with seeds treated with hot pepper. Don't use the powder cayenne pepper, because it irritates the birds' eyes, but birds can eat flaming hot seeds, while squirrels cannot.
