Hippies didn't create a "counter culture", they were and are a neo-luddite, spiritual immune response to the corporate consumerism that emerged after community self reliance was destroyed by the suburban diaspora following WWII. Henry Miller foresaw all of this long before the mainstream caught up with it in any way and any excesses attributed to hippies might be attributed to not reading Miller.

The Anger films, the Old Guard, people like Bayard Rustin, even the early Mad magazine, did far more to spread the notion of anti-social independence than Hollywood did.
That idea of setting one's own moral compass in the face of societal and governmental disapproval led to Stonewall, which led directly to today's victory in New York.


The notion that those of different color, culture, or sexuality are inferior is bigotry in any form, whether it comes from the driver of a pickup truck, or of a Prius.

And that is the notion that the Flyer regularly reinforces, from The Rant, to the Humbug, to the patronizing and condescending attitudes of the editors and publishers.

Actually Truman signed Executive Order 8802, in 1941. It was directed at defense contractors, but it specifically ordered all federal agencies involved in the war effort (including the military) to provide training without regard to race.

As far as desegregation being 'accomplished', that depends on what you mean.
