Ras: you're right; "social" media definitely have a place---in the third world or other places where more conventional means of communication are repressed or penalized, and where the anonymity fostered by the "social" media can prevent the potentially dire consequences of expressing an opinion.

I was fascinated to find out that the ghoul who allegedly dismembered the child in NYC had a Facebook page.

"They are primarily instruments of ego and vanity... which, if anything, corrupt discourse and deceive their users into believing they are engaging in a meaningful form of communication."

Completely absurd statement. You need to read up on the roll social networking played in the Arab Spring revolutions.

That's a bit harsh, BV, considering I was just expressing an opinion, one, I might add, that's shared by many, like those highlighted in John's piece.

FB and Twitter will die of their own weight or as the result of some spectacular scandal, or as the result of the clients of social media "consultants" coming to their senses.

John: Judging from the article you read, and where you read it, I suspect you fell prey to one of the masters of self-promotion who've convinced a credulous audience of the legitimacy of their claim to social media expertise.

Throughout history there have been people who've successfully peddled various elixirs that turned out to be snake oil.
