I'm very much afraid that Wharton's getting ready to capitulate to the opponents of dedicated bike lanes. I don't know whether it's too late or not, but I urge folks to contact the Mayor's office, their city councilperson and anyone else they can think of to persuade Wharton not to pull an Obama on us on this issue.
You may say, "what good will this do", to which my response is what my father(wise man that he was) used to tell me when I protested about the futility of certain things.

The Mayor has been reported to be working on a "compromise" regarding the bike lane issue which, he says, "won't make everybody happy". In other words, he's getting ready to capitulate, even if only partially, to the opponents of dedicated bike lanes on Madison in spite of his stated support for those lanes.

Why does this sound disturbingly familiar?

Oh, and Sensible Moderate: judging from your comment, I sense that what you're actually moderate about is your belief in the rights of cyclists. The telltale is your use of the term "militant cyclists" (who, if they existed, would be going a helluva lot faster than the speed you ascribed to the ones you claim you saw), and the fact that 90% of your comment was dedicated to the need to rein in cyclists.

Exceptions to this are sensible...turning left, going around parked cars, etc. I bike Madison regularly (live 1/2 block off it) and also drive it.
