one of the reasons I appreciated Schnucks as did many here, is their selection of quality foods, and their large selection of healthy choices and products... Kroger caters to their own brand, which usually is lower quality, heavily processed food items...
Schnucks offered a nice variety at more reasonable prices than Whole Foods or Fresh Market.

Kingsley, what you wrote was fine, but Memphis is, by most measures and many sources, a lousy place to live in all of the key factors that matter (economy, labor force, schools, crime, amenities). It's not that these sources don't "get" Memphis.

Fresh Market and Whole Foods are specialty grocers, also known as "boutique" stores because they cater to a niche market, and therefore are not in the same category as Kroger, Schnuck's or WalMart. That's why those three (when we had them) controlled nearly 70% of the grocery market in Memphis, while the boutiques barely moved the needle.

I'm afraid Mr. Jaffe's right; Memphians, on the whole (other than certain limited enclaves), are not terribly cosmopolitan in their grocery shopping habits, preferring price over quality, which is why Kroger will end up beating out Schnuck's in the race to the bottom.

Whole Foods, which charges an arm and a leg for specialty food items, is also usually packed. I guess these "cosmopolitan" stores must be full of tourists from St. Louis, yearning for a taste of home.
