If anything, a lawyer coming to the defense of a judge only reinforces the public's impression that lawyers and judges enjoy too cozy a relationship, and a particular lawyer taking it on him/herself to do so can easily be interpreted as engaging in an exercise in brown-nosing.

Judge Potter did a very good job of explaining himself, and his ruling, at the hearing last Friday (as Hannah Sayle's excellent article following the hearing mentioned).

Good question, but human nature being what it is, don't expect people who lived during that time to engage in much self-reflection about their own participation in the system. Mostly, Karen, you'll hear, like you wrote, how good they were to their servants, not ever questioning the entirely unjust and unequal relationship, based on race.
