      <![CDATA[OK, I can sort of see where M is coming from on this:<br>
A lot of the airport’s revenue comes from landing fees. The best way for any airline to ensure that the landing fees remain at a minimum is to a) make sure the airport does not go on a building binge a.k.a renovate the concourses or terminals and b) make sure as many planes as possible are actually landing at the airport.

      <![CDATA[Ronnie: my point only was that the airport makes its "nut" on FedEx, so that's who it sees as its primary constituent, and that's who it caters to, not us peons who pay through the nose for plane tickets. You saw, I assume, the CA article yesterday that said how the airport is still operating in the black in spite of a "tough" year that included a steep drop in passenger traffic.

I just flew from Nashville to New Orleans over the Thanksgiving holiday.<br>
$160 round trip.<br>
Was it worth the drive to Nashville?<br>

But when we have such glaring examples of the failure of deregulation, in communications, banking, rail, and the airline industries, it stretches credulity to try to say that this is going to be fixed by letting free market forces have free reign.

      <![CDATA[Old Hippie has a point. Why would Southwest or any other "low cost" carrier enter the market and risk a blow back from Delta in other markets if the good people of Memphis have proven their willingness to drive to Little Rock and Nashville?

      <![CDATA[We had the same situation when Northwest was the dominant airline, but Delta has taken it to new heights. Part of the problem in attracting other airlines may be that so many Memphis travelers are going to LR or Nashville, or booking flights to/from other cities and getting on/off at Memphis.
