I have to disagree with the statement, "Standardized testing requires mere basic recall and memorization."

This is wrong. No student can memorize everything that is on a standardized test, unless, as someone else stated, they are given the answers beforehand.

Whatever benefit is derived from so called value-added assessments is utterly lost on my children. They absolutely detest standardized testing and it's contributing to their growing distaste for school.

Not only that- but it's widely known that some children are given the answer to tests in schools to keep such teachers averages up when they are being evaluated that way. Let's say when you have five 2nd grade classes and one and only one teacher has 100 percent pass rate on the same standardized test every year- and none of the other teachers do- there is a problem.

While I think that standardized testing is THE cancer that is killing our education system, I do agree, to a certain extent, with the Value-Added assessment model. Just like any other evaluation tool, it must be employed correctly.

"Many students are living in poverty, dealing with emotional and family trauma — and yet these children are supposed to show gains on a standardized test despite the enormous obstacles facing them."

If she had ended this sentence with a question mark, my short, direct answer would be "Hell F***ing Yes!"
