Sorry, RS, but most historic sites, like the church (which was listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation), are "fallow." That doesn't lessen their value, though, unless you measure the value of everything by its ability to bow to the god Mammon.

Rouse's was actually a family-run grocery chain based in Thibodaux LA who bought the Sav-A-Centers in metro New Orleans from A & P. In truth when it was Sav-A-Center it still beat the pants off anything in Memphis for "local" products. In New Orleans, though, the consumers demand that "local feel" and access to local products...there are still several family-run grocers with 3 - 4 locations and zero Krogers.

You're right that midtown has a lot of lower-income residents, and that a strict viewing of the demographic numbers might not look great. BUT, there are already a number of low-to-mid-market options in the midtown area to "satisfy" that demographic.

Back to the question at hand: Midtowners like to think of our neighborhood as a monolith and an economic oasis, made up of Central Gardens, Hein Park, East Parkway and the like; you know, where all the men are strong (and wear suits to go to work), the women good looking (while they push their jogging strollers) and the children above average (and attending chichi private schools), but the truth is very different.

We can engage in all the wishful thinking we want to (e.g., Publix, Trader Joe's, etc.), but I don't think the demographics of "Midtown" (as that term is loosely used) support a high-end, much less a specialty, grocery store.

Sam, because of the WSJ paywall, I can't cite the article directly, but if I recall correctly, the neighborhood in Detroit is one on the upswing, near hospitals/universities. The number of farmers markets were one of the factors that was a draw for Whole Foods.
