Joe,

A reasonable point of view.

What do you propose to do about the value of the 40 schools (of the 44 total) that were taken off the SCS books and transferred to the MCS books as their assets when the city annexed? Should any compensation be given to the suburban taxpayers outside Memphis for their continuing payments for those schools after they were transferred?

Wouldn't it make sense to allow the district that paid for the school to retain both title and debt for the school ?
Schools in Germantown would become a Germantown asset or liability exclusively.

As a relative newcomer to the Metro area with a student in a Shelby county school this chaos is both confusing and alarming.

Why is it that Memphis is permitted to say "we aren't capable of running a school system, you educate our kids."

Giving these breakaways buildings just for the remaining debt service hurts me as a County taxpayer not in one of these munis even more than I hurt paying for government schools never having had a child in them.

Same observation for giving the munis a tax break on their County taxes.

Your proposals would enable re-segregation along class lines proxying for race. The better path for class stratification (Sociology 101), which is NOT the same as racial discrimination, is to discontinue school busing, based on the now unitary status of the system.

Failing that, a truly good parent can pay private school tuition, the way we used to do it in America before so much creeping socialism instituted by tyranny of the (then) majority soaked all of us for the proletariat's baby-sitting service, which enabled women to work outside the home more and pay more taxes our pols could use to buy votes and make war.

It is a ridiculous notion that these towns should be given a "deal" on the schools in their borders. At most, the value of the school should be discounted by the percentage of the total county taxes paid by that town.
