I agree with you on that, which is why I think Cash's suggestion about sharing ideas, teachers, and maybe even students was absurd.
It's almost as if some people either refuse to learn or just choose to completely ignore history. You are correct that I haven't spent time in inner-city schools, though I did interact with many of their students through programs such as the Bridge Builders and/or athletics teams I was on in my high school days.

I don't believe that the race of a teacher has anything to do with whether a kid can/will succeed or not, but I do believe that the teacher has to have the ability to relate to his/her students and understand what they need in terms of discipline and what drives them.

In this city, that often does divide on racial lines, but it's not a prerequisite, unless the children are being raised in a prejudiced manner where they are unwilling to accept someone of another race working with them.

You have some very good ideas there OTP. It's just a shame most of them will never get off the ground because they would require more work, less standardization, and more consistent follow up.

It's easier to have standardized curriculum, use a pass/fail system, and grade teachers on pass/fail percentage.

I honestly think that if some of these radical type ideas were to be tried, they would need to be tried in a smaller school system, where the theories can easily be tracked and proven.

Trying to overhaul a major, large system would be difficult, and it would be difficult to get buy-in to make it happen, unless there were proven results and a proven system already out there.

      OTP is exactly correct!

Let this blackman say what black school board members fear to say or can not say or don't believe to say.

This comment has nothing to do with views on the merger.

This is about reform in all-black high schools and elementary and middle schools as well.

OTP has said these things before.

For real reform in MCS schools:

1) "First of all, we need to group students within each school according to their present ability."

2) "Drill, baby drill."

3) "Instead of using the fail/pass system the way it is used now, use the proceed method. Do not let a child proceed, especially in elementary school, until he/she masters their respective grade.

"Why don't you guys give concrete suggestions on how to improve the MCS schools."

The CA had an article not long ago about the principal at Manassas and the strides he has made by more or less pushing his own story of coming from poverty and making something of himself. He's made it his priority to force parental involvement and take an interest in the lives of all of his students.

That's what it takes.
