The way the self-defense laws work in Florida, even if Zimmerman hit Martin first, if Martin indeed punched him in the nose knocking him down, then jumped on him and started beating his head into the sidewalk, Zimmerman could shoot and still be within the law. You can't shoot someone just for hitting you, but you can if you feel you are in danger of great bodily harm or death.

Actually, I've never seen what "Stand Your Ground" has to do with this case, but everyone else seems to think it does.

Zimmerman told the police that he acted in self defense. Who is now no longer the the Chief of Police, Mr. Lee, said the police did not have probable cause for an arrest.

When a defendant claims self-defense, "the State has the burden of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in self-defense." In other words the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt never shifts from the prosecution, so it's surprisingly easy to evade prosecution by claiming self-defense.
