Detroit has a few other things that Memphis lacks: access to a foreign country only five minutes over the Ambassador Bridge or the tunnel under the Detroit River, Belle Isle which trumps Mudd Island in size and entertainment options and Grosse Pointe. The latter has a road called Lake Shore Drive where the Fords, Dodges, Chryslers, Fishers (of Fisher Body fame), etc. built their mansions.

The auto workers union (and its members) wouldn't have been the reason American car companies were among the most successful manufacturing operations in the world for about 70 YEARS, would it?

Auto company management, among the most overpaid (hundreds of times what their workers were making), out of touch executives in the world, manufacturing vehicles (SUV's and trucks) no one wanted to (and didn't) buy for years wouldn't have been a "variable" in the "decay," would they?

P.S. Not that it would matter to someone like CHG, but the auto workers union was also instrumental in the civil rights movement.

What's the picture supposed to signify, that Detroit has converted one of its streets into a wildlife sanctuary, or that it's so deserted wild animals have taken over?

Maybe Bruce walked in the wrong part of downtown, or maybe it cleared out to avoid those wild and crazy alternative news types, but Detroit's convention and visitors bureau lists 118 attractions in and around downtown, including quite a few bars, restaurants, clubs, museums, theaters, an opera house, an orchestra hall, the zoo, a university, and yes, four major league sports venues. I'm all for Memphis boosterism, but we're the victims of enough undeserved bad raps that we should be a little more sensitive to doing that to others.
