dwtownlover (Paul Morris, perhaps?): that's some fancy footwork, but the fact remains, COGIC owns the property, therefore any public money spent on it, one way or another, inures to that religious institution's benefit.

Tell me a privately owned property, commercial or otherwise, that's getting this kind of subsidy to abate blight.

Agree Brett. If the city is going to do this, it should be as a loan on a property that they feel will see the return after it sells to a developer.

If the property isn't worth $2M even in good condition, then tear the building down and start over.

If the city is going to allocate 2M dollars for clean up and repair of this property that is owned by COGIC then I suggest that COGIC repay the city the 2M, with interest, after they sell the property to a developer. I assume the property is worth well over 2M since the city council is willing to allocate that much money to get the building in decent condition.

AP: see, statements like that do little to bolster your claim that your support for msd's has nothing to do with race.

This city dishonors the church/state distinction with impunity, whether it's officially sanctioned (even if not sponsored) prayer breakfasts, or sectarian prayers offered at the beginning of all city council meetings. You'd think, suffused with as much religiosity as we are in this city, we'd have less crime, poverty, divorce, teen pregnancy, domestic violence and so many other things for which religion is touted as the antidote.

Why do Memphis residents outside of downtown continue to tolerate a city government that throws good money after bad (The Pyramid, Peabody Place, The Pyramid [again], Pinnacle Airlines, Hotel Chisca, etc.) in one part of the city while ignoring the problems that plague other areas?
