John, the property tax and sales tax affect businesses much more than residents. This is just another reason to move a business out of the core or into Mississippi.

And we wonder why people are leaving the city.

It wasn't so long ago that my city property tax bill was a few hundred dollars, but every time it was raised, the city always said something like, "it's only a few pennies for every hundred dollars, blah, blah, blah", and before long, it was over 800 bucks.

So JB, your $5 on every $1000 example, doesn't hold much water with me. Yeah, you start out paying $5, but you end up paying closer to a $1000 after all is said and done.

Enough is enough......cut the spending!!!

I agree with these councilmen that the sales tax increase is the cowards' way of avoiding cutting spending. The city doesn't need over 7,000 employees, a number that's risen even as population has declined, and the threat that a reduction in personnel expenses would necessarily affect emergency services is nothing but a scare tactic.
