For the record, I openly admit and recognize the fact that my university is fortunate to have been one of the charter SEC members.

Even though we do have SOME tradition in football, if we were left to compete for attention from major conferences, we would be in a tough spot given our lack of TV market.

      @Memphistenguy

I've been saying all along that though the Big East is clearly better than being stuck in a dying CUSA, Memphis, if it's smart, will immediately adopt the position of every other Big East football school, which is looking to woo every potential suitor out there.

The problem for Memphis is they have so much ground to make up, and in my opinion, the clock is ticking.

If I'm the Big 12, I'm looking at FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson, those types of schools to expand into new markets if I'm going to 14 or 16.

You go from fighting with the MWC, CUSA, and WAC schools for attention from the Big East to fighting the Big East and ACC schools to get a look from the Big 12, and you're fighting programs with better TV markets and better facilities and tradition already in place. It's a tough place to be.

If Memphis ends up losing out on the Super Conference shuffle, the best thing I think the athletic department could do is try to get tied to the Big East basketball schools and cut funding to football.

      I pretty much agree with your synopsis Grove, my point is that I believe the UofM can only benefit from a fostering an all sports, regional rivalry no matter what conference either school may be in and that the City of Memphis with its central location within the SEC should be pursing every SEC tournament possible.
JB, Thanks. I have to admit I don't follow a ton of basketball recruiting, but I'm pretty confident in my Ole Miss basketball history to remember that the Memphis players we've had over the years weren't looked at by Memphis.

UT may have pulled a couple that Memphis coveted, but overall there seems to be a strong push locally for the kids from the area to go to Memphis if they are pursued.

That's why I don't think it's a big threat to Josh, though his recruiting strategy has largely been Memphis-focused, so I understand him having some reservations.

@mad_merc, if I'm Bowen or anyone at Memphis, the conference I'm seeking is the Big 12.

      It seems to me that Memphis the city should do a lot more in pursing the SEC as far as tournaments go (for all sports), while Memphis, the university should work towards developing a meaningful rivalry across all sports with some one, any one, be it Ole Miss, UT, or Louisville.

      As an Ole Miss fan, I have my own opinion.

On the football front, it's definitely more of a win for Memphis to play the game. For Ole Miss, we can gain just as much playing Fresno State in a 2 for 1 as we get playing Memphis home and home.
