M_Awesomeberg,at the gun show this weekend, there were hundreds of FFL dealers selling firearms as well as plenty of NON FFL holders selling things other than firearms or ammuntition at the show.I don't recall seeing any private sales at the show but I did see a couple folks with firearms on their shoulders with a sig sticking out of the barrel with the particulars about that gun:model, caliber, how much they wanted for it.
Believe it or not,the ATFE DOES Keep records on what types of firearms are sold at any venue. That is how they know how few times "semi automatic firearms that look military" are used for crimes-less than 1%.They are, however barred from knowing by name who is buying which guns.Imagine if the government knew by name who was voting for which candidate.Would you like them tracking that information? It's a Right, just like buying a gun.
If people were hitting gun shows to buy firearms that they fully intended to use in a crime, they'd be able to trace them.I've bought and sold plenty of used guns & had top go through the background check. The guys I've sold them to haven't gotten the police sent to my house looking for the last person they could trace the gun to.It's the guns I've had stolen that worry me like that. Then I'm the one proving that my M1A/M14 type rifle was stolen at the same time Katrina was hitting Mississippi in 2005.
As I've said before,if all the hoplophobes wanted were reasonable gun laws, they wouldn't keep going to Congress asking for more. The new bills they want passed could easily be defined as "Unreasonable" since they didn't ask for it at the time they were talking "reasonable gun control".
Bruce, are you aware that Japan has a much different legal system than the US does? The police don't need warrants to enter a private home.An officer can enter your home unannounced to search for evidence of a crime that you didn't know was committed & there's nothing you can do about it.
Police can also keep you awake for however long it takes to get you to confess to whatever crime they are charging you with,do things to you in order to get you to confess that the ACLU wouild call torture or coercion & when you sign the paper, you don't get to see what you signed translated to a language that you read. You could be confessing to have voted for John McCain in 2008 for all you know.
Maybe you'd like to live in such a society but I wouldn't.I'd rather have the government restrained by law than to be restrained by the government.

m_awesomeberg,the Justices currently on the Supreme Court were NOT the ones who wrote the Bill of Rights. They are not originalists. They are supposed to compare the Constitution as written to laws passed in contemporary times not re-write it to suit changing in society.
If the only reason to have large capacity magazines is to kill large numbers of people, then obviously that clown got some bad magazines.
You also don't know the laws concerning firearms purchases. There ARE background checks on every gun sale.Single shot, lever action, pump, semi auto hunting rifle, military style(assault is an action, not a device)rifles, shotguns. If a firearm is purchased from a federally licensed dealer, the transaction goes through the police(Tenn Bureau of Investigation,in this state) who checks a nationwide datat base for criminal records that would disqualify the sale.
Even at gun shows, this is required. The only time a firearms sale is NOT required to have a background check is when the sale is person to person as in if i sold one of my guns through the paper,I wouldn't have to do a background check on the buyer, just like as if I were selling a car through th paper.
I do have one final point:If the gun controls that were passed in 1994 "reasonable gun controls",does that make anything that wasn't included but desired by the hoplophobes for a later time "unreasonable"?

Not arguing that a shotgun would've been a better choice, but your assertion that hunting rifles and assault rifles are interchangeable is simply dead wrong. Your "shot with every trigger pull" argument is simply a smoke screen to confuse the laymen and general populace.
While I agree with you that semi-automatic high powered weapons should not be intended for the public, nutcases are always going find a way to kill lots of people in soft targets like a movie theater...driving a truck into a crowd, etc.
Mad,
All hunting rifles have necked down cartridges, unless you want to count .22 cal rifles.
The same calibers are available in hunting rifles as "assault rifles", they all cycle at about the same rate, and hunting rifles can fire just as many supersonic rounds. Every time you pull the trigger the gun fires.

Not that it matters much, but "assault rifles" (I really hate using the quotes by the way) are generally hyper-velocity rounds. That is the bullets are usually smaller and the casing is necked down to provide more powder, which in turn provides a faster bullet.

Thanks for the response Dictator Awesomeberg, and I can't say I see anything there that I would disagree with.
As I've stated, I'm not a gun owner, never have been, but I'm still interested in the issue of gun control, and I can see some of both sides of the argument.
